How Much Does a Private Investigator Cost?

Understanding Investigative Rates and What You Should Consider Before Hiring a PI

The cost of hiring a private investigator can vary considerably depending on the type of investigation, the complexity of the matter, the experience required, and the amount of time necessary to complete the assignment.

Some investigative firms charge flat fees for certain services. Gradoni & Associates generally bills investigative services on an hourly basis, allowing clients to pay for the investigative time and services actually provided rather than applying one predetermined price to every case.

Private investigator rates can vary widely. While hourly rates are an important consideration, the amount an investigator charges per hour does not necessarily determine the quality of the investigation.

A lower hourly rate can become expensive if the investigator lacks the experience, resources, or personnel necessary to complete the assignment efficiently. Likewise, a higher hourly rate does not automatically guarantee better results.

For that reason, we believe clients should look beyond the hourly rate and consider what they are actually receiving for their investment.

What Should You Consider When Choosing a Private Investigation Firm?

Before hiring an investigative company, consider more than price.

At Gradoni & Associates, our investigative team brings diverse experience to the cases we handle, allowing assignments to be matched with investigators whose backgrounds and abilities are appropriate for the work required.

Is the company properly licensed?

Verify that the investigative company is appropriately licensed to conduct investigations in Texas.

How established is the company?

Consider how long the firm has been operating, whether it maintains an established professional office, and the experience and reputation it has developed over time.

Is it one investigator or an investigative team?

Different investigations require different skill sets. An established firm with investigators from diverse professional backgrounds can assign personnel based on the specific needs of a case rather than relying on one investigator to handle every type of assignment.

Does the firm have experience with the investigation you need?

Surveillance, criminal defense investigations, background investigations, corporate theft, witness interviews, social media research, and other investigative assignments require different experience and resources.

Why Surveillance Costs Can Vary

Surveillance can be one of the more time-intensive investigative services because results often depend on circumstances outside an investigator's control.

The investigator may need to remain in the field for extended periods, follow a subject between locations, document activity, or conduct surveillance over multiple days.

Experience and staffing also matter.

A professional investigative firm should have investigators capable of operating discreetly in different environments. The investigator assigned to a surveillance operation should be selected with consideration for the location, circumstances, and nature of the assignment.

This is another reason why comparing investigative companies solely by hourly rate can be misleading.

Background Investigations Require More Than a Database Search

A professional background investigation should involve more than entering someone's name into a database.

Depending on the purpose and lawful scope of the investigation, experienced investigators may research criminal and civil court records across multiple jurisdictions, verify identifying information, examine publicly available records, and conduct extensive online and social media research.

The amount of information available today can be enormous. The value of an experienced investigator is not simply having access to information, it is knowing where to look, how to verify what is found, and how to distinguish relevant information from inaccurate or unrelated results.

There Are Legal Limits to What a Private Investigator Can Do

Professional investigators must operate within state and federal law.

For example, Texas law restricts the installation of electronic tracking devices on motor vehicles. A private investigator may only place a tracking device on a vehicle when the investigator has the legally required authorization, such as permission from the vehicle's owner. An investigator cannot simply place a tracker on any vehicle because a client requests it.

Likewise, private investigators do not have unrestricted access to private telephone records, text messages, bank accounts, or other protected communications. Access to certain records may require the account holder's authorization, or lawful legal process via subpoena.

Be cautious of anyone who claims they can obtain protected records simply because they are a private investigator; how information is obtained matters just as much as what information is discovered, particularly when investigative findings may become relevant to litigation. Records obtained illegally cannot be used in court proceedings.

Will the Person Know They Are Being Investigated?

In many investigations, the subject is not notified simply because an investigator has been retained.

Confidentiality and discretion are fundamental parts of professional investigative work. Whether contact with a subject, witness, employer, business, or another individual becomes necessary depends on the nature and objectives of the investigation.

Our clients are kept informed throughout the process, and investigative findings are documented in detailed reports and communicated professionally. Generally, investigative reports are considered "privileged."
